The 7400 is AutoMeter’s 8.8-inch InVision Digital Dash in universal panel-mount configuration, built for custom builds, restomods, hot rods, kit cars, and any project that demands modern instrumentation without being locked into a single vehicle platform. Behind the high-resolution 8.8in color LCD sits a full six-gauge cluster: Speedometer, Tachometer, Fuel Level, Oil Pressure, Water Temperature, and Voltage. Five user-selectable screen layouts with color customization let you dial the cockpit aesthetic to match the rest of the interior, whether that is a stealth-black gauge pod in a track-prepped G-body or a retro-bright display in a bare-firewall drag car. This digital dash replaces an entire instrument cluster with one clean module, a single wiring harness, and a remote-mount joystick controller that handles all navigation without a touchscreen.

Display and Gauge Overview
The 8.8in high-resolution color LCD consolidates everything a driver needs into a single, uncluttered panel. All six gauges update in real time, and the integrated indicator suite covers the essentials without requiring separate warning lights scattered across the dash. The included remote-mount joystick controller handles menu navigation and layout selection, keeping the display face clean.
- Gauges: Speedometer, Tachometer, Fuel Level, Oil Pressure, Water Temperature, Voltage
- Indicators: High beam, left turn signal, right turn signal, check engine warning
- Odometer: Programmable at initial install (within first 500 miles of use)
- Trip meters: Dual trip meters included
- Clock: 12-hour or 24-hour selectable
- Unit display: Switchable between imperial and metric
- Screen layouts: 5 user-selectable layouts with color customization options
- Navigation: Remote-mount joystick (no touchscreen required)
- Brightness: Adjustable day/night dimming
The tachometer covers both 8K and 10K RPM ranges (user-selectable) and calibrates for 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, or 12 cylinder engines, working equally well behind a four-cylinder import motor or a big-block V8. The speedometer accepts OEM, square-wave, sine-wave, and GPS speed signals, calibrated via a simple two-mile drive procedure. Fuel level reads through seven selectable resistance ranges to match virtually any sending unit already in the tank.
Programmable Alarms and Customization
Both visual and audible alarm outputs are built in across the four most critical channels. When a parameter drifts past a programmed threshold, the display triggers an on-screen alert and an audible tone simultaneously, giving the driver immediate notification without needing to scan individual gauges.
- Low fuel level alarm: Visual and audible
- Low oil pressure alarm: Visual and audible
- High water temperature alarm: Visual and audible
- Low voltage alarm: Visual and audible
Alarm thresholds are fully programmable during setup, so the unit can be dialed to the specific needs of the engine and application rather than relying on generic defaults. Day/night brightness adjusts manually to maintain legibility from direct sunlight to a dimly lit garage.
The five screen layouts are not interchangeable with custom artwork or user-designed gauge faces. What this dash delivers instead is a refined set of professionally designed layouts with meaningful color control, a setup that prioritizes readability under real driving conditions over novelty.
Universal Fitment and Installation Requirements
Part number 7400 is a universal panel-mount unit. It does not drop into any factory dash opening without modification. Installation requires cutting or fabricating a dash panel to accept the 8.8in display, routing the pre-terminated wiring harness to each sensor and signal source, and mounting the remote joystick controller within reach of the driver. This is the correct choice when no direct-fit InVision option exists for the vehicle, or when building a custom interior from scratch.
Fitment notes:
- Compatible with any 12V DC automotive application
- Requires custom dash panel fabrication or modification
- Not compatible with OEM dash openings without cutting or custom panel work
- 5A fuse recommended on the constant power line
- No vehicle-specific bezel or bracket hardware is included for any particular make or model
LS swap compatibility: Works with LS-swapped vehicles using the AutoMeter Gauge Install Kit P/N 5284 (sold separately). For 2010 and newer LS engines, AutoMeter recommends adding P/N 9117 or P/N 9123 to obtain a proper tach signal. The same applies to Ford Coyote swap motors.
CAN Bridge compatibility: For 2008 and newer OBD-II vehicles, the ATM-9113 CAN Bridge Module (sold separately) reads sensor data from the vehicle’s existing computer and transmits it to the display, eliminating the need to wire dedicated senders on late-model engine swaps. Diesel applications use the ATM-9112 CAN Bridge (sold separately).
Holley EFI compatibility: This is a standalone unit and cannot accept CAN input directly from Holley systems. It is fully compatible with Holley Terminator and Terminator X-Max setups when using dedicated sensor inputs to the display.
Speed sensor options (sold separately): Because many custom installations already have a compatible speed signal in place, a speed sensor is not bundled with this kit. Compatible options include:
- P/N 5289: GPS Speedometer Interface Module ($259.15), no calibration drive required, plug-and-play installation
- P/N 5291: Hall Effect Speed Sensor, GM/Chrysler style ($112.99)
- P/N 5292: Hall Effect Speed Sensor, Ford style ($118.66)

| 7005 | 12.3in | Direct-fit | 1982-1987 Chevy El Camino, Malibu, Monte Carlo |
The universal 8.8in display fits into tighter dash openings and suits builds where space is at a premium. The 7000’s 12.3in display suits applications with more real estate or where maximum visibility is the priority. Direct-fit variants include vehicle-specific bezels and mounting hardware that require no dash cutting for their respective models, but they are not interchangeable across vehicles. For every build outside those specific applications, the universal panel-mount units are the path forward.
About AutoMeter
AutoMeter Products has been building precision gauges and instrumentation from Sycamore, Illinois since 1957. The company’s catalog spans analog and digital gauges for street, strip, road course, and marine applications, including the full InVision Digital Dash line. AutoMeter’s reputation in performance instrumentation is built on sensor accuracy, electrical durability under harsh underhood and underdash conditions, and calibration flexibility that covers a wide range of drivetrain configurations. The InVision series brings those same principles into a modern all-in-one digital dash format, replacing a full instrument cluster with a single calibrated display and harness.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will this unit fit my vehicle?
This is a universal dash compatible with any 12V automotive application. It does not fit any factory dash opening without modification. You will need to fabricate or modify a dash panel to accept the 8.8in display. If a direct-fit InVision option exists for your specific vehicle (see the comparison table above), that option requires no cutting. The universal mount is the right choice when no direct-fit option exists or when building a fully custom interior.
Why is a speed sensor not included?
Many custom and restomod builds already have a compatible speed signal available, whether from a late-model engine swap, a previously installed electronic speedometer, or an existing hall-effect sensor on the transmission. AutoMeter omits the speed sensor from the kit to avoid charging for hardware the installer does not need. If no speed signal is present, compatible options are P/N 5289 (GPS module, no calibration drive required), P/N 5291 (GM/Chrysler hall-effect), or P/N 5292 (Ford hall-effect). All are sold separately.
How does the speedometer calibrate?
The speedometer uses a simple two-mile drive calibration procedure. Find a known two-mile stretch of road, start calibration at the beginning, drive it, and end calibration at the two-mile mark. The unit calculates the correct speed output from that distance. If tire size, axle ratio, or anything else affecting the speed signal changes later, the procedure can be repeated at any time. The GPS module (P/N 5289) eliminates this procedure entirely and requires no calibration drive.
Does this dash work with LS-swapped builds?
Yes. Use AutoMeter P/N 5284 (Gauge Install Kit for LS engines) to connect the display to an LS drivetrain. For 2010 and newer LS engines, AutoMeter additionally recommends P/N 9117 or P/N 9123 for a clean tach signal. The same applies to Ford Coyote swap motors. These adapter kits are sold separately.
Does this unit work with 2008 and newer OBD-II vehicles?
Yes, with the 9113 CAN Bridge Module (sold separately). The CAN Bridge reads sensor data from the vehicle’s existing computer over the OBD-II CAN network and feeds it to the display, eliminating the need to install dedicated oil pressure and water temperature senders on a late-model engine. Diesel applications use the 9112 CAN Bridge instead.
Can I add additional inputs like transmission temperature or air/fuel ratio?
No. The display is fixed at six configured inputs: Tachometer, Speedometer, Fuel Level, Oil Pressure, Water Temperature, and Voltage. There is no provision for additional sensor inputs or custom gauge channels beyond the six built in.
Can I customize the gauge layouts or add my own graphics?
Five user-selectable screen layouts are included, with color customization available within each layout. Custom screens, user-uploaded graphics, and custom gauge designs are not supported. The five layouts cover the most common instrument presentation styles for performance and custom builds and are designed for maximum readability under driving conditions.
How does the fuel level gauge work with my existing sending unit?
Seven selectable fuel sender resistance ranges are built in: 0-90, 240-33, 73-10 linear, 73-10 non-linear, 16-158, 40-250, and 0-30 ohm. Select the range that matches the sending unit already in the tank during setup. The unit is compatible with standard variable resistance to ground senders. Most aftermarket solid-state senders are not compatible.
Can the odometer be set to match my vehicle’s existing mileage?
Yes, but only during the initial installation window, within the first 500 miles of operation. At initial setup you can program the odometer to match the vehicle’s current mileage. Once the unit has accumulated mileage beyond that point, the odometer value is locked and cannot be changed.
Does this dash work with Holley EFI systems?
This is a standalone unit and cannot accept CAN input directly from Holley systems, including Sniper, Terminator, and Terminator X-Max. It is fully compatible with any Holley EFI setup when wired using dedicated sensor inputs to the display rather than CAN data. The dash functions independently in this configuration.
What fuse is required?
AutoMeter specifies a 5A inline fuse on the constant power line (the long red wire in the harness). This is required per the installation instructions. Failure to fuse the power line correctly may affect warranty coverage on electrical damage.
What is the difference between this unit and the 7404?
Both use the same 8.8in InVision LCD display and share identical gauge and feature sets. The 7404 is a direct-fit kit for 1967-1972 Chevy and GMC trucks, including a vehicle-specific molded dash bezel that installs without cutting or fabricating a custom panel. This universal unit requires custom dash work but fits any 12V vehicle. If you are restoring or building a 1967-1972 Chevy or GMC truck, the 7404 is the cleaner install. For every other application, the universal panel-mount is the correct path.
